Born in Greene County on Aug. 2, 1933, he was the son John and Della (Moss) Kessner.
He was a retired certified blaster/shooter for Monsanto, involved in many area coal mines. After his retirement he also worked as a driver for Furrow Lumber and Wolohan Lumber. Most recently he was employed at Sam's Club.
He was a member of the Jasonville Assembly of God Church and a Korean Veteran of the US Navy.
On Dec. 31, 1974, he married Phyllis 'Bunny' (Hodges) Kessner and she survives.
He is also survived by five sons, John R. Kessner, Jeff Scarbrough and his wife Donna, Rick Scarbrough and his wife Jill, Mark Kessner, and Jay Kessner and his wife Teresa; one daughter, Dawn Smith and her husband Doug Smith; and one brother Jack Kessner; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at DeBaun Springhill Chapel in Terre Haute with Rev. George Guinn officiating.
Burial will be in Prairie Creek West Lawn Cemetery with VFW No. 972 giving military rites.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday and after 10 a.m. Saturday.
