Cards netters down Patriots

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

The Bloomfield Lady Cardinal tennis team again relied on singles play to give them a solid 3-2 win over host Vincennes Rivet Wednesday.

Rivet used a revised lineup to strengthen their doubles in hopes of winning both doubles and picking off a singles victory.

The Bloomfield singles player proved to be too tough at the singles positions for that to happen.

Bailey Maryfield rolled through Katlyn Hinkle 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles position. The score was similar at the second singles spot where Nikkole Thombleson took out Rachel Richardville 6-0, 6-1. Sarah Miller faced the most resistance but put Anjelica Carandany away 6-1, 6-3.

Even though neither doubles team could come out on top they played well against the much stronger Rivet teams. Bloomfield's No. 1 doubles team of Abbie Humerickhouse and Christina Neill were downed by Carly Carlisle and Meredith Goodwin 6-1, 6-4. The Rivet pair is usually the top two singles players.

The situation was pretty much the same at the two doubles position. Lindley Gremore and Rachel Toon were downed by Emily Snider and Taylor Ostendorf 6-3, 7-5.

I was happy with the performance of both doubles teams in each of their second sets. They played much smarter and took advantage of their opponent's mistakes.

Bloomfield comes back home today for a 4:30 p.m. match against Owen Valley.
