Born in Huntingburg on Sept. 10, 1915, she was the daughter of Emil Fredrick and Minnie (Heichelbeck) Steinkamp. After the passing of her mother, Kathryn's father married Lydia Sophia Poetker.
She married John R. Ax on July 23, 1938, who preceded her in death on September 1, 1984. She was an English and math teacher, owned and managed Ax Farms and was one of the founders of WITZ Radio in Jasper.
Kathryn was a member of the Saron United Church of Christ, Delta Delta Delta Sorority and Tri Kappa (Active-Associate Member).
Survivors include: her daughter, Kay Anne Sullivan and son, Michael David Ax, both of Linton; grandchildren, Christy (Mike) Cottone, Erika Sullivan and Dusty McKim, Patty (Chuck Robison) Ax, Jonathan (Diane) Sullivan, Carita Ax and a step-granddaughter, Katie Creek; great-grandchildren, Addison Cottone, Chase Cottone, Ansley Robison and step-great-grandson, Dusty Robison; brother-in-law, J.B. Bowen. She is also survived by special friends and caregivers Moya Dailey, Dixie Souders, Joy Weber, Mary Lou Burch, Nancy Cooksey, Vicki Gamble and Tina Crenshaw.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Thomas Dale Ax and Dr. John Daniel Ax; a daughter, Toni Sue Ax; one grandson, Erik Sullivan; one great-grandson, Cade Cottone,a son-in-law, Joe Sullivan; and sister, Ruth Bowen.
Graveside services will be held at Fairview Cemetery at 1 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Mike Roth officiating.
Arrangements are being handled by Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton.
The family has requested memorial contributions be made to the Saron United Church of Christ. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
