He was born Dec. 9, 1921, to Russell W. and Hazel Irene (Padgett) Messick.
He lived in Bedford for several years and retired from Crane Naval Depot. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of Liberty Christian Church.
Survivors include: Betty Knight his friend and trusted partner; one daughter, Karen (Russ) Gardner, Lebanon; one son, Bill (Vicki) Messick, Worthington; six grandchildren, Russ Gardner, Jr., Kelly (Dale) Stephens, Debbie (Bryan) Sheets, Michael Gardner, Paige Brown, Kristen Campbell; 11 great grandchildren and eight great- great grandchildren; sister, Mary (Roy) McClellan, Bedford, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one granddaughter-in-law, Juli Gardner.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Worthington Cemetery with Larry Alvey officiating.
Welch & Cornett Funeral Home, Worthington Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
