Vera B. Hathaway Layton, 91, of Terre Haute passed away at 6 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2008, at her residence.
She was born March 6, 1917, in Hutsonville, Ill., to Frank M. Hathaway and Clara McCrory Hathaway.
Vera worked at Crawford County Soil Conservation Office and Crawford County Farm Bureau in Robinson. At the beginning of 1947, she moved to Terre Haute and worked for Maumee Collieries Co., a coal mining company, for almost 10 years. Vera married Lewis D. Layton, a high school classmate, on March 24, 1949. They then lived on a small farm south of Terre Haute. Lewis worked for Public Service Co., and did some farming. A daughter, Vicki D. Layton, was born June 3, 1958. Lewis passed away Dec. 7, 1966, following a heart attack. Vera and Vicki remained on the farm until October 1975, when they moved into Terre Haute. Vera worked for Kelly Services in the early 1970s, which included Gibault School for about three years. She then began work at Indiana State University Student Health Center in July 1974, retiring Aug. 1, 1988.
Survivors include: a daughter, Vicki D. Layton of Terre Haute; sisters, Florence King and Zylpha Rains, both of Robinson, Mary Cromwell of Terre Haute, and Ruth Conn of Villa Grove, Ill. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harry F. Hathaway and Winfield M. Hathaway; and two nieces, Nancy Rains Hellman, and Nita Ann King Groothuis.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., with the Revs. Tim Minks and Mary Kidwell officiating.
Burial is at Hutsonville Cemetery, in Hutsonville, Ill. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. until services Saturday.
