Safety is a top concern

at Worthington event

To the Editor:

In just a few days the community of Worthington will once again host its annual town wide yard sale, this will be held on Aug. 30. This event brings in hundreds of visitors into our community.

We will have vendors, yard and garage sales, house sales and businesses will open their doors filled with antiques and so forth. Along with the activities comes vehicle and pedestrian traffic and that can create some serious problems that I feel need addressed. We will have cars, trucks, moving vans, horse drawn buggies, bicycles, ATVs, golf carts and a flood of foot traffic on the streets and alley ways. Over the past several years we have been fortunate to not have any serious accidents or injuries. A few minor fender benders, some folks get over heated and some get upset wanting to buy the same articles.

I would like to offer some safety suggestions to make this year's activities safe and enjoyable for all.

Please do not block the roadway with your vehicle, pull off as far as possible, folks won't mind if you get a bit into the grass areas. Be aware of what and who are around you while in operation of any motorized vehicle, other folks around you may not be paying attention to where they walk. If you plan on bringing a golf cart make sure you have a valid driver's license in your possession, have a slow moving sign attached to the rear of the cart and if your cart is equipped with lights have them on at all times when in operation. Remember you will have to follow the same rules of the road as if driving your automobile. If you plan to operate an ATV you will be required to operate it under the state guidelines and also make sure it is registered.

Remember it is the operators responsibility to know the rules. Don't ruin your day by being issued a traffic citation. If you drive a motorized bicycle, you must be at least 15 years of age have either an Indiana ID card of valid driver's license and don't forget the helmets and eye protection.

If you need to review the rules before you operate research I.C 14-16-1-5 through 14-16-1-29 and 9-21-11-12 through 9-21-11-13. Remember emergency vehicles may be needed and must be able to navigate the streets in case on a medical or other emergencies.

Upon your arrival in town be familiar with the location of the Police and Fire Department in case you need help. Officers will be out on the streets in uniform and civilian dress this year. Let your children know that if Mom and Dad get lost they can go to any yard sale participant for assistance. Have a designated meeting place if you let your youngsters off on their own, be alert to your possessions, if you walk please secure your vehicle and don't leave valuables unattended.

We want everyone to have a fun and enjoyable day, but remember when good folks gather so do some bad ones, and safety is a responsibility of everyone.

We need to send the right people to Congress

To the Editor:

It looks like the Democrats strategy continues to be "Hate Bush," a strategy that lost the last two elections. In the speeches I heard in this last week, there were many references made to the Bush-Rowe-McCain connection. Hasn't the Democrat leadership caught on yet?

It's a good thing that the voters that count aren't swayed by all this negative garbage. What I don't understand is why the party sticks with these cerebral deficient "leaders"? I realize that both parties have their share of sheeple, but they don't win elections. The winners are the voters that educate themselves on the issues so they can vote smart.

Why can't all voters do as they do? We face a two-month period filled with political rhetoric, some on the issues and most of it is garbage.

The focus has been to the top of the ticket. The important part of this election is who we send to Congress. Are we going to tolerate a Nancy Pelosi "rubber stamp" or are we going to elect someone who represents us? Maybe we should educate ourselves and communicate our expectations to our Congressman, so he has and idea what we expect from him.

Is this too much to ask? After all, this is a Government: Of the People, By the People, and For the People. The People being "YOU"

Thanks for listening,

Family says thanks for helping Linton woman

To the Editor:

We would like to thank Carol and Tom Wright for assisting our grandmother/mother when she was alone and fell outside of her home last week.

In this day and age, not many people want to "get involved," so we especially appreciate them taking the time to assist her until help arrived.

It's people (neighbors) like them that help renew a little faith in humanity.
