Cardinal netters stay undefeated

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

The Bloomfield Cardinal boys tennis team improved to 5-0 with a 5-0 win over the visiting Owen Valley Patriots Wednesday.

The Cardinals were pushed at No. 3 singles and at No. 2 doubles but managed to pull out three-set wins at both positions.

At No. 1 singles, Derek Corn beat Jordan Truax 6-2, 6-2 while Willy Scott downed Bryan Redenbarger 6-1, 6-0.

Owen Valley's Randy Leintz kept Joel Oliphant off balance in the first set by getting to the net whenever he could.

Oliphant started hitting crisper shots and managed to force Leintz into volley errors and into a third set. Oliphant closed out the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.

The No. 1 doubles team of Holden Hamm and Austin Schulte played one of their better matches of the season, defeating Raymond Amos and Mike McHaley 6-0, 6-1. The Bloomfield duo played aggressively and made few mistakes.

The BHS No. 2 team of Jacob Chestnut and Curtis Hasler started off strong breezing through the first set but had to regain focus after dropping the second set to beat Quinn Wilson and Donovan Jones 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.

Bloomfield continues its home stand Thursday against Bedford North Lawrence for a 4:45 p.m. match.
