WRV netters win first match

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

The White River Valley boys tennis team recorded their first victory of the season -- a 3-2 win over visiting Sullivan Wednesday. The Wolverines improved to 1-4 on the season.

Playing without a No. 3 singles for most of the season, the roles were reversed Tuesday for the Wolverines as they received a forfeit, which proved to be the difference in the match. Damian Hiatt, who has spent time playing at No. 2 doubles, picked up the forfeit at the previously vacated spot after Evan Karr and Derek Myers were defeated at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.

Karr fell in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 (7-4) while Myers fell 6-0, 6-2.

WRV coach Daniel Crites was pleased with the effort he received from his young squad.

"This was really good for the kids to build their confidence," Crites said of his first win of the season. "Hopefully this win will point us in the right direction for the rest of the season."

Also picking up their first win of the season was the doubles tandems of Austin Roudebush and Garret Miller at No. 1 and Ricky Anderson and Adam Sapp at No. 2.

Roudebush and Miller picked up the win in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 (7-5), while Anderson and Sapp was forced to a deciding third set for the win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

"We had some kids that were faced with some tiebreakers tonight, which was a good experience for them," Crites said. "I think the kids know that they can battle and pull out wins now."

The Wolverines will look for their second win of the season when they travel to Vincennes Rivet on Friday.
