SHS falls at Edgewood
The Shakamak Lakers volleyball team stumbled on the road Tuesday night as they dropped a four-game match at Edgewood, 15-25, 25-14, 26-24 and 25-12. The loss snaps the Lady Laker winning streak at six matches as they fell to 6-2.
"Well we took a couple steps in the wrong direction tonight," Lady Laker coach Jeri Morin said after the loss. "I am hoping that it was just the long weekend and we can snap back into the swing of things."
According to Morin, serving was an issue for her squad. On the night, the Lady Lakers missed 10 serves which resulted in 86 percent from the service line. The coach also was not happy with the serve receive effort as well.
"I have never seen our serve receive so poor," Morin said. "We were depending on someone else to get the passes. And we are still struggling with our own serves."
One Lady Laker that did not struggle from the service line was Amanda Gilbert. The junior was perfect on her 14 attempts, scoring a team-high nine points including one ace. She also recorded a team-high 17 assists to go along with seven digs and one kill.
Older sister Jess Gilbert finished the night 7 of 9 serving with six points and recorded a team-high of six kills.
Kelsey Farris connected on 11 of her 13 serves for six points including two aces. The senior had a team-high of 14 digs and recorded three kills.
Freshman Mikayla Crane missed two serves in her 12 attempts from the line to finish with seven points and a team-high four aces. She also contributed with four kills.
The JV squad picked up a win over Edgewood, 25-22 and 25-15.
Despite not being happy with the performance she saw from the varsity on Tuesday night, Morin was pleased with the effort from the Lakers junior varsity team.
"One thing positive was our JV had a good win," Morin said. "They played with a lot more confidence tonight."
The Lady Lakers will look to get back on the winning track Thursday when they play host to Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference foe White River Valley.
