Harry Eugene Groves, 83, of Bloomington and formerly of Jasonville, passed away at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008 at his residence.
Born Sept. 28, 1925 in Lafayette, he was the son of Harry Everett Groves and Minnie Mae (Smith) Carpenter Groves
He was married to Thelma Jean (Sexton) Groves on Dec. 29, 1945 in Midland. She preceded him in death Jan. 11, 2002
The family came to Jasonville in 1935, his education from 4th grade to high school graduation in1943 was in Jasonville. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. His overseas service was spent flying as a tail-gunner on B-24 bombers out of Italy. He was discharged from the USAF in December 1945. He then went to work for the United States Post Office as railway mail clerk in 1947 and retired from the Bloomington post office in October 1980.
Survivors include: sons and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Mary Jane Groves of Bloomfield and David B Groves of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Stacey M. Groves, Bradley Robert Groves, Owen Martin Groves, Keegan Bryan Groves, Annie Kate Groves; one daughter-in-law, Catherine Martin; one sister, Vera Juanita Groves Stiffler of Indianapolis; a cousin, Barbara Groves Nickeson of O'Neal, NE; as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 57 years, Thelma Jean Groves; a brother, Raymond Carpenter; three sisters, Dorothy V. Cummings, Geraldine Edwards and Thelma M. Groves Wilkes.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home in Jasonville.
Servicees will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Carl Leth officiating.
Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery in Midland with military graveside rites.
