Charles Franklin Simmons, 74, of Bloomfield passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 at his residence after a long battle with cancer.
Born November 27, 1933 in Winter Haven, Florida he was the son of James Franklin and Hattie Mae (Yarborough) Simmons. On April 18, 1954 he married the former Betty Jean Coulter, who survives.
He was a career member of the United States Army, Air Force and Navy, retiring in 1971 as a Navy hospital corpsman. He served with the Fleet Marines in Vietnam, and he recieved a Purple Heart.
He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Linton and was the past commander of the Bloomfield American Legion Post No.196, he was also a member of the Crane VFW Post No. 9297.
Charles is survived by his wife of 54 years Betty Jean Simmons of Bloomfield; two daughters Teri Simmons of Linton, and Kathy Simmons and Sandy Sweeney of Williamsburg, VA; four grandchildren Mike Hoover of Bloomfield, Angela (Workman) Gilpin of Peyton, Colorado; Jesse Sheetz of Williamsburg, VA; and James Gentry of Sandborn; three great-grandsons Justin, Ethan and Houston. One sister Imogene (Simmons) Gay of Bartow, Florida; four brothers Harold Simmons, Paul Simmons, and Ernest Simmons all of Winter Haven, Florida; and Wayne Simmons of Venezuela; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother Mae Simmons; his brother, Dennis Simmons; and twin siblings Johnny Simmons and Joyce Simmons.
A memorial servive will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Linton with Pastor Joe Faust officiating.
Friends may call from 11:00 am Wednesday November 19,until the hour at the church.
