Lakers skid continue

Shakamak committed a total of six errors in being swept in a twin bill against visiting Terre Haute South Saturday in non-conference softball games over the weekend.

Shakamak committed four errors in a 6-4 loss to the Braves in game one, before having two miscues in a 4-2 loss in the night cap.

"We just pretty much self-destructed in the first game," Lakers head coach Paige Wolf said. "Errors highlighted the game and we just beat ourselves."

Mikayla Crane was the losing pitcher in the first game. The freshman fanned two batters while scattering eight hits.

Casey Fougerousse and Brandi Ashcraft led the seven-hit attack for the Lakers at the plate with two singles apiece. Ashcraft also drove in a pair of runs.

Crane registered the only extra base hit with a double. Jess Gilbert knocked in a pair of runs with a single and Sydney Weinzapfel recorded a single.

In game two, the Lakers jumped out to a 2-1 lead after two innings, but the Lady Braves tallied single runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to complete the sweep.

Brandi Ashcraft was the starting and losing pitcher for the Lakers. She recorded one punch-out and issued one walk.

Ashcraft and Pearson each had a pair of hits at the dish. Pearson and Jazmine Martin each had a two-bagger in the loss, while Marki Collins added a single.

"We played better in the second game, but we just did not come up with enough production to come away with the win," Wolf said.

  • Now, I have never had a problem with Paige Wolf, or Amy Hammond before her. However, I will say that in at least the last 20 years, maybe more, the biggest mistake that Shakamak has made in any athletic decision was caving into pressure and getting rid of Beth Wernz. When you have a coach that knows how to win, you should do everything to keep them. I will agree that there is a line as a coach that you do not cross. However, I don't think Beth Wernz ever crossed that line. Her accusers knew how it is with coaches and players sometimes and I found their accusations to be hypocritical and ridiculous. So now, Shakamak is suffering in softball for the first time in years. It has been coming the past couple seasons, but I think it's finally here. I just feel sorry for Paige here as well. Such a class act.

  • Totally agree with Stewie...Coach Wernz had experience on her side as well. Also she was totally committed to the program. I know Paige is as well as was Hammond but they both have families to go home to each night where Coach Wernz's family was the softball team. It is such a shame, too, considering the talent of the current team. They need an experienced coach to get those wins!
