Lakers down West Vigo
The Shakamak softball team ended a seven-game losing Monday night by defeating visiting West Vigo, 4-1. With the win the Lady Lakers improve to 3-7 on the season.
Freshman, Mikayla Crane pitched the complete for the Lakers. She issued just three hits, fanned eight batters and gave up three free passes. The one run she allowed was unearned.
Crane also helped herself out at the dish with a pair of runs batted in. She recorded a sacrifice fly and drove another run home with a fielders choice ground out.
Marki Collins led the seven-hit offensive attack with a pair of two-baggers and a single.
"Marki busted out of a slump tonight," Lakers head coach Paige Wolf said. "She really hit the ball well tonight."
Jazmine Martin also recorded a double, while Brandi Ashcraft, Keshia Deschamp and Sydney Weinzapfel rounded out the offense with singles.
"We had a much better effort all the way around tonight especially at the plate" Wolf said.
The third year coach said hopefully the win can jump-start the team for the rest of the season.
"It was a big relief to get the win," she said. "Hopefully we can gain some much needed confidence from here on out."
Wolf also lauded the performance of Brandi Ashcraft, who was playing ill and battled through the entire game.
The Lakers will return to the diamond for another non-conference tilt Tuesday night at home against Turkey Run.
