He was born Aug. 23, 1920, in Jasonville, the son of Thomas & Lucy (Hensley) Wathen.
He was a farmer and worked as a mechanic on Ford's for Red Sanders and worked 25 years for Laverne Rollison on Ford tractors. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus, where he served as a bingo caller and was a member of American Legion Post #22 and VFW Post #7118, all of Linton. He was a 1939 graduate of Switz City Central High School & was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Charles T. (Diana) Wathen and Michael J. (Karen) Wathen, both of Linton; a daughter, Veronica (Terry) Morris of Greenwood; two brothers, Tom Wathen of Los Angeles, CA and Jim Wathen of Arkansas; four grandchildren, Christopher (Jennifer) Wathen, Dr. David (Stephanie) Wathen, Richard Morris, and Mary Morris; a great-grandchild, Owen T. Wathen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lillian Mary (Graves) Wathen, two grandchildren, Robert and Brenda Morris, two brothers, George and John Wathen; and a sister, Agnes Wathen.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at St. Peter Catholic Church in Linton at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, with Father Michael Madden officiating. Burial will follow at Switz City Cemetery. The Linton American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside rites.
Friends may call at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton on Thursday from 5-9 p.m. and Friday from 9-10 a.m. Rosary recited at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Linton Community Food Pantry through the funeral home.
