She was born January 5, 1910 in Bloomfield, the daughter of Winfield and Audrey (Hattabaugh) Ambaker.
Winnifred was a homemaker and past member of the First Methodist Church of Valparaiso. On May 2, 1931 in Indianapolis, IN, she married George A. Nelson who preceded her in death June 5, 1985. George was a Vice President at Northern Indiana Bank and was instrumental in helping to bring the Port of Indiana to fruition. His many heralded accomplishments were possible with the support of Winnifred by his side.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy (Karl) Douglass of Valparaiso, and Jane (Dwain) Holmgren of Chesterton; five grandchildren, Lisa (Michael) Lowe, Carrie (James) Manago of Valparaiso, Derek Holmgren of Bloomington, Danen Holmgren of Chesterton, Kara Holmgren of Greenville, SC; four great-grandchildren, James (Beth) Manago of Valparaiso, Lisa Manago of LaPorte, Jordan and Sarah Lowe of Valparaiso.
Private graveside services were conducted at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso on Friday, July 3, 2009 with Reverend Brenda Ludwig of Salem United Methodist Church, Hebron officiating. Bartholomew Funeral Home of Valparaiso handled Winnifred's arrangements.
