David Wence begins his second season in charge of the Linton-Stockton High School girls cross country program.

"Last year was a learning experience for both me and the girls," said Wence. "Because of that, we tried to meet with the girls once a week this summer to try and build a base.

"We also have been running out here at the Narrow Lake Camp Site at Greene-Sullivan State Forest. Our course at school is basically flat. Out here we have hills. It has been better for the girls."

At one point, Wence was uncertain if he would have the required five runners to compile a team score during a meet. With a few additions in the second week of official practice, six girls are now running.

"You always wished you had more kids involved," he said. "But I only want girls out here that want to work and will do what you have to do to be able to run in competition.

"We did not have any eighth graders that ran in junior high last year. It would have been good to have a few girls bump up, but that is something you don't have any control over."

He said this group of girls has been working pretty hard.

"We are much farther along than at the same time last year."

Kelsey Overton earned a spot on the all-Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference team a year ago by finishing 10th at the meet in early October. Sophomore Kerrie Waskom also earned all-SWIAC by finishing ninth.

Bre Alsman ran 17th in the same race.

Overton and Alsman are both juniors, along with Olivia Robison, a transfer student.

Waskom and Haley Rennick are both sophomores and Logan Coleman is a senior that did not run in 2008, after she competed as a freshmen and sophomore.

"Kelsey and Kerrie are probably our top two runners right now," said Wence. "After that, it is hard to tell how the rest of our top six will look like."

He added that he is looking forward to seeing how the girls develop and improve as individuals and how they can stack up as a team as well.

"Whether we have four, five or six girls, we will still train as a team," he said. "You never know about injuries and illnesses and how or when they might hit the team.

"We will be comparing times from last year when we ran at different invitationals. We are still working on putting down and good base and building up from there."

The Lady Miners will begin the season today against North Daviess and host White River Valley.
