Alva "Max" Payne, age 71, of Clay City, formerly of Linton, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 at his residence.

He was born Oct. 17, 1937, in Linton, the son of Leroy and Dorothy (Wright) Payne.

He retired from Crane NWSC in 1992 and later worked part-time for the Department of Natural Resources at Dugger, retiring in 2006. He was a United States Navy veteran. He enjoyed any sporting event, especially those his grandchildren participated in. He attended the Cory Community Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly (Alderson) Payne, to whom he was married on Aug. 30, 1975, two daughters, Angel (Roger) Horn of Centerpoint and Carol Payne-Phelps of Linton, a son, Michael (Kelly) Payne of Danville, a brother, Melvin Payne of Linton, three sisters, Cheryl Shields of Linton, Vanetta Graves, of Switz City, and Judy Metzger of Sullivan, four grandchildren, Itasha Phelps and Kendra Szela, both of Linton, and Carli Jackson and Rhys Horn, both of Centerpoint.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Jack Bough, and Rex and Joe Payne.

Visitation will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Funeral services will be conducted at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 with the Rev. Rick Parsons officiating. Burial will follow at Marco Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the American Legion Post 22 of Linton.

All family and friends are invited to attend a dinner at the Linton First Christian Church immediately following the burial.

Memorial Contributions can be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital or the food pantries of Linton and Clay City, all through the funeral home.
