Born June 18, 1940 in Mill Springs, Ky., he was the son of Everett Sweet and Flonnie Withers Booze.
Hershel was a bridge carpenter and a 1958 graduate of Worthington High School. He was a member of the Church of God and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps -- serving in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion, White River Antique Association, Florida Flywheelers, Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association, Indiana Carpenter's Union, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Lodge.
Survivors include: his wife, Janet Hoffman Sweet, whom he married on April 25, 1964; daughter, Michelle (Tim) Murdock of Fort Wayne; a son, Hershel R. (Carrie) Sweet Jr. of Washington; a grandson, Bryant Sweet, of Washington; his mother, Flonnie Booze, of Worthington; sisters, Mary Helen Thompson, of Worthington and Vicki (Eddie) Lynn of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Barbara Sweet; and two sisters in infancy.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at Gill Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. Melvin Paulus officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Riley. Full military ceremony will be provided at the cemetery by the Worthington VFW and the Worthington American Legion Post.
