Ruth Elinor Elrod, 73, of Cape Coral, Fla., and formerly of Bloomfield and Orleans, passed away Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009.
Ruth was born June 7, 1936 to Huber and Louise Crandall in Depauw, Ind.
She is survived by her husband, Billy A. Elrod and her three children, Stephen Elrod of New York, New York, Jan and husband Kent Yake of Bloomfield, and Lanna Elrod Flynn of Cape Coral, Fla. There are seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Leatrice and husband Jack Jenkins of Carmel and Martha and husband Ron Rightley of New Albany. One brother survives, Roger and wife Jo Crandall of Orleans. There are several relatives and numerous friends.
Ruth was a teacher and media specialist. She was working as a teacher in Adult Education at Dunbar Community Center. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, sudoku puzzles and helping others. She was a survivor of breast cancer and was involved with Partners for Breast Cancer Care. She had served on the Bloomfield, Greene County Public Library. She was past president of the Ladies of the Elks, PEO and Psi Iota Xi. She was a member of the Orleans Eastern Star 352. She was also a member of the First Christian Church in Cape Coral and was involved with Hannah's Circle and Good News. Ruth graduated from Orleans High School with the class of 1954 and graduated from Indiana University.
Service will be Saturday, Jan. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with the Rev. Arlen Pope officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Orleans.
Friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 10 a.m.until 2 p.m. on Saturday.
