Daren William Hanauer, 87, of rural Bloomfield, died Jan. 30, 2010 at Lyons Health and Living Center.
Born Oct. 15, 1922 in Bippus, Indiana, he was the son of Othol and Grace (Ahner) Hanauer. He was married to Barbara (Dilley) Hanauer June 8, 1951 at Wesley Foundation on Purdue University campus.
He graduated from Purdue in 1951 with a degree in mechanical engineering. While at Purdue, he was an active member of the Wesley Foundation.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II (Cruiser Oklahoma City) Nov. 19, 1942 to April 10, 1946 and Korean War June 18, 1951 to July 1952. He was retired from Crane Naval Ammunition Depot, but still actively farming since retirement from Crane.
He was a former member of Greene Count's Soil and Water District when he received Outstanding Conservation Farmer of the year (1996) award. While serving on the Greene County Soil and Water Board of Directors, he was chairman. 1984-1996 he received the Distinguished Service Award in recognition of exceptional leadership and devoted service to the board of supervisors. In 1995, he was awarded the Award of Merit for outstanding accomplishments for resource conservation.
He was a member of the American Angus Association, Indiana Angus Association and former member and past president of the Southwestern Indiana Angus Association. He received a Historical Angus Award from the Indiana Angus Association on Dec. 28, 2007 in reconition of being a breeder of registered Angus for 75 continuous years. He also served as member (past president) of the Bloomfield School District's holding corporation.
He was Sunday School Superintendent at Nine Mile United Methodist Church in the late 1950's. He was also a former Church Trustee during the 1990's at Bloomfield United Methodist Church.
He was also a past member of the Highland Township advisory board. He loved his family, Church, Purdue University, and farming.
Surviving relatives include: his wife, Barbara Anne (Dilley) Hanauer; his children, Susan Street (Junior Thompson) of Bloomfield, Nancy Hanauer of Bloomfield, Jo Ann Carmichael of Bloomfield, Mary Alice Hollenback of Douglass, Kansas, Linda Cullison (Tom) of Bloomfield and Keith Hanauer (Janene) of Bloomfield; brothers and sisters, Ted Hanauer (Irene) of Fort Wayne, Marjorie Boze (Bob) of Roanoke and Shirley Nail of Bradenton, Florida; grandchildren, Scott Stahl (Marcy), Adam Carmichael (Jen), Tim Carmichael (Dara), Sara Figg, Jessica Belcher (Mike), Justin Cullison, Matthew Hanauer, Sean Hanauer, Megan Hollenback, Cassie Hollenback and Daniel Hollenback; 9 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, and 2 step great great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, John Hanauer and a son-in-law, J.B. Street.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Bloomfield United Methodist Church, with Rev. Kevin Raidy officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to services Thursday at Bloomfield United Methodist Church. Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.
