Greene County needs to stick together to prosper

Monday, February 1, 2010
Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Cheryl Hamilton asked a Greene County elected official last week to at least consider two of her members for future business.

After learning that an office at the Greene County courthouse was considering using an out-of-county company to print county documents, Hamilton e-mailed the person in charge and suggested that two of her members -- Smith Printing and Lamar Imaging -- could do the job.

"I would think both would be willing to deliver copies to your office upon completion," Hamilton said in her e-mail, which she shared with the Greene County Daily World.

"I work with both of these businesses on a regular basis and find both to be professional and complete the work I need on a timely basis. Both actually go over and above often rushing work for me at the last minute. I just feel both businesses would at least appreciate the opportunity (to) bid on work for your office, as well as work from other Greene County elected officials. I am sure you understand the importance of doing business locally."

If our county elected officials don't support Greene County businesses, why should anyone else? Sooner or later, everyone will be forced to drive out of county to do any kind of business.

When that happens, it's too late. Our local economy will be beyond repair.

Hamilton and the Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce deserve a huge pat on the back for supporting their businesses.

Someone posted on a blog at www.gcdailyworld.com last week a famous quote from Benjamin Franklin. It states: "We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately."

If Greene Countians don't stick together and support each other, we don't have a chance to prosper.

And that's sad.
