Roy Charles John Spanger, 82, died at 5:10 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Prarie Village in Washington.
He was born Aug. 5, 1927 to Carl an Freida Snyder Spanger at the family home place near Westphalia.
Roy was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ where he was baptized and confirmed. He was married May 23, 1953 to Gloria Gadberry Spanger, who survives. He was a farmer.
Roy attended Westphalia and Edwardsport schools. In March 1951, he was drafted in the Army and served in the 592nd Signal Air Ground Liaison Company. Past memberships imclude Edwardsports American Legion Post No. 73 and the Edwardsport Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors are daughter, Beverly Payne, Mt. Carmel, Ill., and a son, Loy (Reba) Spanger of Bicknell. Grandchildren are Lori (Gary) Anderson, Elk Grove, Ill., Angela Spanger, Edwardsport, Jamia Payne, Fairfax, VA, and Kristen Payne, Ashburn, VA; and great-grandchildren, Olivia and Ryan Payne; brothers, Arthur (Alice) and David Spanger.
He was preceded in death by his parent; brothers Bruce and Charles; an infant sister, Joan; and son-in-law, Jim Payne.
Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. at The Frederick & Son, McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Bicknell Chapel.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Salem United Church of Christ in Westphalia with Pastor Peter Bortz officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites.
