He was born in rural Paxton on May 2, 1941, the son of James Edgar and Alta Lois (Adams) Utterback.
Jim was an U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He worked at Crane, was in Air-Traffic Control at O'Hara Field, and managed the American Legion Post #22 in Linton for 15 years.
He was a life-member and past commander of the American Legion Post #22 of Linton, in which he held several district offices, a life-member of the VFW Post #71118 of Linton, the Linton Masonic Lodge #560, and the Scottish Rite of Terre Haute.
He is survived by two sisters, Carla (Harry) Hovey of Linton and Theresa L. Bogard of Lake City; nieces and nephews, Rick Niebrugge of Bonita Springs, FL, Frankie Sue Sanders of Dexter, MI, Rob Niebrugge and Tony Niebrugge of Linton, Brandy Bogard and Amanda Bogard of Lake Station, and Crystal Will-Sullivan, and a special friend, Jane Head of Linton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Charlet Hamm.
Funeral service will be at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton at 11 a.m. Thursday, with Virgil Bland officiating.
Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post #22.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-8, and Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
