Walter E. Steele, 87, of Worthington, passed away at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010 at Linton Nursing & Rehab Center.

He was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Greene County, he was the son of Roy and Rose (Hostetter) Steele.

He retired from NSWC Crane in 1978 after 34 years service. He manager in supply at Crane. He attended Indiana University before going to the Army during WW II. He was a member of Bloomfield Christian Church, 50 year member of Knights of Pythias Lodge #253 in Worthington, 50 year member of Bloomfield Masonic Lodge #84 F. & A. M. and Eastern Star #538, Bloomfield American Legion Post #196. Walter was a licensed pilot and loved to fly small planes.

Walter is survived by his wife Norma (Bingham) Steele, they celebrated their 40th anniversary June 27; two daughters, Debbie (Rick) Lemons, Bloomfield; Denise (Pat) Gilliland, Bloomfield; three grandchildren, Jason Noel, Sarah Beth Lemons and Allen Lemons; one great grandson, Devon Noel; three step-sons, Reginald Gregory, Worthington; Mark (Pam) Gregory, Spencer; Bradley (Sandi) Gregory, Plainfield; two step-grandchildren, Jessica Faith and Nathan Eric Gregory; two sisters, Clara Grafton, Loogootee and Arretta Spoonmore, Avoca; two brothers, Dale Padgett, Linton and Eugene Padgett, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Maxine Hostetter; two brothers, Leo and Johnnie Hostetter; three half brothers, Jesse, Bud and Don Padgett; and one sister, Vernadean Padgett.

Funeral service Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Worthington, 2 p.m. Sunday, August 22.

Friends may call at Welch & Cornett 5 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, and noon Sunday until time of service.

Burial will be in Worthington Cemetery.
