He was born in Vincennes, to the late Spencer and Mary Ellen (Coffel) Walker.
He married Patricia A. "Patti" (Rynard) Walker on Jan. 28, 1983.
Mel retired from the Indiana State Police as a Master Trooper after 20 years of service. He most recently worked security at Cook, Inc. in Bloomington.
He was a 1957 graduate of Linton High School and received an Associates Degree from Vincennes University.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. "Patti" (Rynard) Walker; one son, Spencer Walker and wife Jennifer of Bloomington; five daughters, LouAnn Manning of Avon, Diana Kolb and husband Jeff of St. Charles, Missouri, Beth Walker-Bell of Greenwood, Tameka Boudaia and husband Okba of Greenwood and Jami Klusmeier and husband James of Greenwood; three brothers, Rodney Walker, Bill Walker and Jim Walker all of Linton; and 13 grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28 at Costin Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bob Hopkins officiating.
Family and friends may visit on Friday, Aug. 27 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Costin Funeral Chapel and one-hour prior to the funeral service.
Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens at Greenwood.
