Dr. Joseph E. Dukes, 91, was a life-long resident of Dugger until retiring in 1993 and moving to Bloomington.
He passed away at 9:15 a.m. Monday October 18, 2010 at Bell Trace Health and Living Center in Bloomington.
He was born in Dugger, Indiana September 24, 1919, the son of Dr. Fred Dukes and Cecil Weaver Dukes.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Dugger,a WWII Army Veteran, the VFW #2459 in Sullivan, and the Dugger American Legion Post #224. Dr. Joe was a General Practioner in Dugger for over 40 years, founder of the Farmers State Bank in Sullivan Co., a past president of the Indiana AMA , also very active in the Republican Party.
He was preceded in death by his parents, also his wife Dr. Betty Dukes in 2005, two brothers, William Dukes, Dr. Richard Dukes, and one sister, Marcella Holtzman.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. Mike Dukes (Judy) of Evansville, Dr. Russell Dukes (Sue) of Bloomington, and Bob Dukes (Tommi) of Bloomington, seven grandchildren, Heather, Joe, Megan, Cami, Craig, Brett and Katie, three great grandchildren, Danielle, Ashley, and Josh.
Private graveside services will be Wednesday, October 20, 2010. Friends may call at Newkirk's Funeral Home in Dugger from 10 a.m. until noon Wednesday.
Interment in the Dugger Cemetery.
