There's some good news to report from the Chris and Nicole Stahl family.

Bailey and Abby Stahl, the 13-month-old twin daughters of Chris and Nicole Stahl of rural Bloomfield, have been patients at Riley Children's Hospital for about two weeks.

Abby has improved and was discharged from the hospital Monday evening, according to her mother.

Bailey remains in the hospital in her 14th day of renal failure.

"They have started training us for dialysis at home," Nicole Stahl reported to the Greene County Daily World on Tuesday.

The twins suffer from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a disease that destroys red blood cells. It is the most common cause of sudden, short-term, acute kidney failure in children.

HUS develops when Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria lodged in the digestive tract make toxins that enter the bloodstream and start to destroy red blood cells.

On Saturday, a breakfast organized by the Bloomfield Volunteer Fire Department raised about $6,000. About 800 to 1,000 people attended the event.

Fire Chief Skylar Pittman says he was impressed with the turnout.

"It says something for our community to have that many people turn out for the cause," he told the Greene County Daily World. "I'm very impressed with what we (the fire department) did. I'm very proud of my guys."

Chris Stahl is a 24-year veteran of the fire department and a former fire chief.

He is presently assistant chief and his wife has been a member of the department for the last five years.

A charity motorcycle ride is also planned for this Saturday to benefit the Stahl family.

The ride will start at the Oodle Inn in Switz City. Registration is from 11:15 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. with the ride leaving at noon.

It will travel to the Long Branch Saloon in Elnora, the Angle Inn in Washington, The Family Restaurant in Loogootee and end up at the Crane Village VFW Post.

Cost is a minimum donation of $10 per person, according organizer Luke Getchtman.

The ride is sponsored by Plummer Productions LLC, the Long Branch Saloon and Getchman Investments.

Also on Saturday, 10 percent of all sales at Cinco de Mayo restaurant in Lyons that day will go to the Stahls to assist with medical expenses.

A basket bingo is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Nov. 12 at the Lyons Community Building to benefit the Stahl family.

The 200 tickets, priced at $10 each, went quickly and are now sold out, according to one of the organizers, Kristin Plano.

Food will be available and raffle tickets for baskets are also available.

The bingo is sold out, but monetary donations for the Stahls would be appreciated.

For more information on how to donate to the basket bingo event, contact Plano at 227-0363 or Vickie James at 384-6549.

A blood drive is scheduled Nov. 27 in honor of twin rural Bloomfield girls

It will be from noon to 4 p.m. at the Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC parking lot, located west of Bloomfield on State Road 54

"Both girls are O+, but all blood types are requested," according to family friend Amber Skinner.

Nicole Stahl added, "It is so important to me to replace the blood we have used for the next family."

A variety of other events have been organized in the community to assist the Stahls with ongoing medical bills associated with the twins' illness.

There are T-shirts being sold for $12 each to benefit the family. A total of 188 shirts had been sold as of Monday.

"Shirts are made to order, and prepay is requested," Amber Skinner said.

The shirts can be ordered any time by calling Skinner at (812) 381-1353.

Checks for shirts can be made out directly to Nicole and/or Chris Stahl.

A bank account has also been established at Crane Federal Credit Union to benefit the family. Donors are asked to deposit into the account of Chris and Nicole Stahl with the designation of the "No. 3" account, which is specially set up for this purpose, according to Nicole Stahl.
