She was born June 24, 1916, in Knox County, the daughter of William and Pearl (Spears) Alexander.
She worked at both Freeman-Greene County Hospital and Greene County General Hospital in Linton. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, both in Linton, a 50-year member of the Linton Eastern Star and a member of Badoura Temple No. 23, Daughters of the Nile, of Terre Haute.
Survivors include a daughter, Jeanette Bredeweg of Linton; a son, Howard Herndon of Linton; a step-son, Billy M. Pirtle of Albuquerque, NM; a sister, Ilene Anderson of Texas; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Jewell Herndon in 1962 and William F. Pirtle in 1994; a step-daughter, Sandy Brown; two brothers, John and Bill Alexander; and two sisters, Lelah Fay Franklin and Patricia Felix.
Funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton with Warren Shake officiating. A private family burial will be at Woodward Cemetery in Dugger on Monday.
Visitation will be at 4 p.m. Sunday until the hour of the service.
