He was a coal miner for Peabody Coal Company and a self-employed farmer. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ and the United Mine Workers Association.
Survivors include his wife, Doris (Lehman) Grounds of Lyons; a son, Gordon (Claudia) Grounds of Lyons; a daughter, Rosie (Terry) Hauser of Switz City; a sister, Phyllis (Morris) White of Lyons; five grandchildren, Chad Grounds, Chris (Andy) Johnson, Jenny (Mike) Mullis, Matt (Dawn) Hauser, and Holly (Jason) Clark; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Andy Hauser.
A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thurs., Jan. 6, at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton, Pastor Gerald DeVore officiating. Burial will follow at Dog Island Cemetery in Lyons.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wed. and at 9 a.m. Thurs. at the funeral home.
The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Dr. David Mullis Scholarship Fund through the funeral home.
