She was born October 25, 1932 in Sullivan County, the daughter of Ray A. Worth and Syvilla Woods Worth.
She graduated from Jasonville High School, Class of 1950. She also attended Indiana State University.
On June 9, 1951 she married John T. "Tom" Gerber and together they have been blessed with nearly 60 years of happiness. Shirley has been an active member of the New Hope Baptist Church. She has taught Sunday school and currently was serving on the Heritage Ministry.
As a young woman, Shirley worked as a telephone operator for Indiana Bell. When they started their family, Shirley was blessed to be a stay at home mother and she enjoyed all the duties that came with the career.
She was a 4-H Leader for 10 plus years with the Handy, Happy, Harrison Helpers. She helped out with the farm work and preparing all the meals. She was also a member of the Delts Sorority in Jasonville. She was known to have fun on family vacations with water skiing and just being "Gram".
For several years, Shirley and Tom enjoyed spending winters in Edgewater, FL. While there, Shirley developed quite a talent for "shrimping". They were members of the Bella Vista Southern Baptist Church in Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Norma Lee Hawkins; one brother, Donald Worth; an infant granddaughter, Tobi Lynn Gerber.
Survivors include her husband, Tom Gerber of Lewis; two sons, Jeff Gerber and wife Elena and Joe Gerber and wife Cindy, all of Clay City; one daughter, Jill Wier and husband Gary of Plainville, IN; six grandchildren, Alex Gerber, Ashlee Gerber, Cody Gerber, Cameron Collins and husband Adam, Chelsee Gerber and Mitch Wier (currently serving in the Marines). One great-grandchild is expected to arrive in May. Proud parents are Cameron and Adam. Several nieces, nephews and extended family also survive.
Services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church (4 miles south of Clay City on St. Hwy 59) with Pastor Brian Holt officiating. Burial will follow at Sink Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday at the church from 4-8 p.m. and again Saturday one hour prior to services.
