He was born in Shelburn, Indiana on January 1, 1933, the son of Roy Howard and Myrtle Irwin Howard.
Hershel retired from King Station Coal Mine in Princeton, Ind., a 30-year member of the United Mine Workers Assoc., and the Pleasantville Coon Hunters Club. He was an avid competition hunter and loved his horses and dogs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; also three brothers, Pete, Donald and Harold Howard; three sisters, Iona Wiggins, Marilyn Young and Mary Alice Howard.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Agnes Hayes Howard, whom he married on October 15, 1953; two sons, Frank Howard (Michelle) of Riverview, Fla., Hershel Howard Jr. "Moe" (Carri) of Dugger; three daughters, Lisa Mejean (Jim) of Linton, Teresa Hasler (Jason) of Linton and Nola Bennett (Mike) of Sullivan; two brothers, Wade Howard of Fairbanks, Ind. and George Howard of Shelburn, Ind.; one sister, Genevie Bailey of Monroe, LA.; 12 grandchildren, Frank Lee, Aydrian, Mckayla, Tyler, Haven, Halee, Hilari, Logan, Kelsey, Natalie, Emily, and Bailey; and five great grandchildren, Mia, Natsha, Ella, Allyson, and Bella.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 1, 2011 at Banks and Brust Funeral Home in Sullivan with Pastor Eddie Hammond officiating. Interment will be in the Little Flock Cemetery in Shelburn. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday.
