Born Sept. 15, 1937 in Terre Haute, she was the daughter of Donald Wayne Shorter and Stella Maude (Barbie) Shorter.
Velma was a homemaker and most recently attended Bethel Temple Community Church in Evansville. She had been a Girl Scout Leader as well as a Boy Scout Leader. She participated in the church youth groups and also lead several church musicals. Her hobbies included music, Yahtzee, cards, reading, caring for others, but most of all spending time with her family.
Survivors include three children, Ricky Schroeder, Evansville, Robbie Schroeder and wife Tammy, Oakland City, and Rhonda Hollingsworth and husband Curt, Newburgh; four grandchildren, Casey Richison and husband Luke, Evansville, Calan Schroeder, Evansville, Heather Hollingsworth, Newburgh, and Haley Hollingsworth, Newburgh; a brother Kenneth R. Shorter and wife Jane, Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents preceded her.
Visitation will be Saturday from noon to 2 PM at the Roselawn Funeral Home in Terre Haute.
Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Kenneth Adams officiating. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Park.
A local memorial celebration will be held at Riverwalk Communities in Evansville on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. Donations may be made to the Susan G. Kommen Foundation. www.roselawnfuneralhome.net.
