He was born July 30, 1929, in Elliston, the son of Clarence "Dink" and Lena (Tanner) Lucas.
Sam worked as a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring after 30 years of service. He formerly drove a school bus for the Linton-Stockton School Corp. and was a former member of the Aircraft Pilot Association. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and was a member of Switz City Masonic Lodge #676, Linton American Legion Post #22, where he was past commander, the Greene County Shrine Club and the Zorah Shrine Club and Scottish Rite, both of Terre Haute.
Survivors include a brother, Kenny Lucas of Bloomfield; a sister, Frances Walker of New Port Richey, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and close friend of 40 years, Millie Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William R. Lucas and Robert Lucas; and two sisters, Marjorie Bledsoe and Helen Marie Lucas.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton with The Rev. Arlen Pope officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery. The Linton American Legion will conduct military graveside rites.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Monday until the hour of the service. The Switz City Masonic Lodge will have memorial services at 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Greene County Shrine Club through the funeral home.
