Stacey Lawson

NEWARK -- A woman's body found in a wooded area near the Newark Baptist Church on Saturday had identified.

The victim has been positively identified as Stacey J. Lawson, 28, of rural Greene County.

"Family members have been notified. Foul play is still suspected and witnesses and persons of interest are still being interviewed or re-interviewed," Indiana State Police Sgt. Curt Dunril, public information officer for the Bloomington Post, said Monday evening.

No arrests have been made.

"At the request and on the authority of the Greene County Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw, no other information will be released at this time. The victim's cause of death and rumors surrounding her death will not be addressed until such time as the investigation allows it," Durnil added.

An autopsy was conducted Monday afternoon at Regional Hospital in Terre Haute, however the cause of death is not being released.

Detectives and crime scene technicians from the Indiana State Police and the Greene County Sheriff' Department are continuing their investigation.

The body of the woman was found about 3 p.m. Saturday in a wooded area near Newark Baptist Church, located south of County Road 760 East and County Road 740 North in northeastern Greene County.

"A cause of death is not known at this time. It had been rumored the victim's death resulted from a domestic dispute with her spouse. That cannot be confirmed, as the victim was not married," Durnil said on Sunday.

Anyone with information about the body found in the Newark is asked to contact the ISP Bloomington Post at 332-4411 or toll-free at (800) 423-1286.

  • It is a tragic event that such a beautiful young lady's life was taken by such sick individual(s). Please be mindful of what you post as half truths or total mis-information is hurtful to the grieving family, who has already sustained the loss of another child. Stac was a gentle soul who maybe lost her way. She will be greatly missed.

  • Isn't the first name properly spelled "Stacey"?

    Response by Nick Schneider:
Stacy is what was released from the police, but her obituary shows Stacey. We have changed it.
  • Had she been missing for awhile?

  • I would still like to know about the first murder 8 months ago that someone was talking about....

-- Posted by ffjj on Wed, Aug 24, 2011, at 11:12 AM
  • ffjj I think they may be talking about the man who was shot and left in the back of a truck. Along side of the road. I dont remember the whole story but it was when like 3 people got arrested for meth. That is the only thing I can think of that has happend up there in the past year.

  • My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this young lady!

  • I think they are referring to the murder of Crystal Grubb-another tragic story without anyone yet charged with her murder.

-- Posted by givsuhll on Thu, Aug 25, 2011, at 12:42 AM
  • AMyers8289 - you are refereing to the Erik Tosti shooting, I dont think he was killed I think he did survive, once again tragic, but that was preventable it was caused by meth and greed. I know nothing about this murder wether that(drugs) had anything to do with it, I wouldnt speculate, that family is going through enought pain as it is already, my prayers go the the family and friends

  • There was another woman found dead in her home about 6 to 8 mos ago in Newark. She was in her mid 20's. In time everything will come out.

  • Sounds like a pretty rough neighborhood over there!

  • So sad, prayers out to the family.

A fact I find VERY peculiar is that this woman as well as Chrystal Grubb from Bloomington, who was last seen alive September 18th 2010, both attended The House of Prayer church in Ellettsville!
