Donald Gene Gehring, 77, of Terre Haute passed away Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011 at 12:05 a.m. in Union Hospital.

Donald was born July 2, 1934 in Terre Haute to Lewis Gehring and Margaret Britton Gehring.

Donald was a 1952 graduate of Otter Creek High School and attended Indiana State University. He was in the United States Naval Reserve from 1952-1960. He formerly worked at E.I. Dupont in Newport, Ind., Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Laborers Union Local 204 and Indiana State University Computer Center for 21 years. He retired from ISU on July 5, 1988. Donald was a member of the Cross Lane Community Church, American Legion Post 104 and the Public Employees Retirement Fund. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge 727 and Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute for more than 50 years.

He loved and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved to play golf. He enjoyed all types of sports, especially on television. He really enjoyed computer games.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Bernice Gehring.

Donald is survived by his sweetheart and wife, Margaret Freers Gehring, whom he married June 5, 1953. He is also survived by a son, Chris Gehring and his wife Kelly of Lyons, Ind. and a daughter, Donna Williams of Charleston, Ill. Donald is survived by a brother, Charles Gehring of Terre Haute; sister, Anita Martin and her husband Charles of Fontanet and an aunt, Johanna Britton DeLong of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Mark Williams and his wife Katie of Charleston, Ill., Christine Killion and her husband Steve of Effingham, Ill, Amanda Gehring and her husband Ryan Smeltzer of Charlotte, Mich., and Alison Burbrink and her husband Josh of Westchester, Ohio. Donald is also survived by two nieces, Kelly Martin of Oklahoma and Dawn Gehring of Terre Haute; one nephew, Randy Gehring and his wife Nancy of Lafayette, Ind.; one great niece and two great nephews. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Donavan and Anderson Williams, Stephen and Trenten Killion.

Services will be Saturday October 29, 2011 at 11 a.m.(EST) at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th St., Terre Haute, Indiana with visitation on Friday October 28, 2011 from 4-8 p.m.(EST) and again on Saturday from 10 a.m. until service time. Pastor Brett Wilson and Pastor Stuart Powell will be officiating; burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
