Eastern starting to build community football complex

Tuesday, November 8, 2011

The Eastern Thunder Community Football League would like to announce it has broken ground on their new Football Complex, which is conveniently located on State Route 45 and County Road 175 South, two miles south of the Eastern Greene High School. The Football League has been in operation for 14 years and has never really had a place to call home, until now.

In those years, the league rented local football fields at Crane and at Eastern Greene High School for games, and resorted to practicing at the Eastern Greene Middle School in side yards, hill sides, and rock infested lawns.

This Sporting Complex will span 10 acres and provide an abundance of opportunities for area children to learn and play the game of football, with the possibility of other sporting opportunities in the future. The new complex will provide a building for concessions, restrooms, and storage, six practice fields, two full size football fields, and abundant parking through phased construction.

The Eastern Thunder Community Football League provides football and cheerleading learning opportunities for 150 to 200 children in Eastern Greene County and surrounding communities per year. The teams are populated with children ages 5 through 12 years old. Teams are set up in age groups; 8U (8 years old and younger), 10U (9 and 10 year olds), and 12U (11 and 12 year olds).

During the 2011 Football Season, the Thunder Football League fielded 6 teams; (3) 8U teams, (2) 10U teams, and (1) 12U team. In 2011 there were approximately 120 children in football and approximately 50 children in cheerleading.

The Eastern Thunder Community Football League is a Non-for-Profit 501c3 organization.

The Thunder Football League is an independent organization and is solely funded through registration fees, donations, and league sponsored fundraisers. Through quality coaching and mentoring, a positive organization, and a fundamentally based program, this League continues to grow attracting youths from Eastern Greene and surrounding communities.

The Football Complex is possible only through generous donations of both time and resources from the community, as well as League sponsored fundraisers.

The Thunder Football league is requesting that any persons or businesses interested in becoming a partner, sponsor, or donor by providing financial, material, or volunteer assistance with the building of this Football Complex to please contact Duane Long, president at 812-361-8735 or donate online at the League's website: www.EasternThunderFootball.com

  • This is wonderful!! This complex has been needed for many years. Glad to hear it's finally happening. Would like to also see a couple softball/baseball fields. They are desperately needed as well.
