Doug Frye (D) will take a seat on the Bloomfield Town Council in January, as he defeated Homer Abrams (R) by 45 votes in Tuesday's election.

Frye brought in a total of 171 votes, compared to Abrams' 126.

"I want to thank Homer Abrams for a good, competitive race. It was close," Frye said after results had been announced.

Frye said he was excited the voters entrusted him with a spot on the council.

"Well, I am truly elated the voters had enough confidence in me to let me represent them on the town council for the next four years," Frye explained. "I think I can represent them well."

Although he was pleased with the outcome of the race, he was not as happy with voter turnout.

"People just don't turn out to vote anymore."

Frye has known the other council members-elect for several years -- Eric Harrah on a personal basis and Dave Harding when they served on the Bloomfield School Board.

"I served on the school board with Dave for several years. He was a good representative for the school, and I have known Eric for years," Frye explained.

He said he knows he has to learn exactly how the council works, and needs to understand the issues the town faces.

"I haven't really been down to see where we stand financially," Frye noted.

"I hope we can move ahead and get some sidewalks and curbs done."

Frye said he would like to get in contact with the state highway department to see about getting the roadways fixed as well.

"These roads and sidewalks just aren't presentable for the town of Bloomfield."

During his campaign, Frye said his goals as a council member were to ensure the beautification of the town, replenish businesses around the square, and to have an updated community building.

Frye has said it is important for Bloomfield to make sure the town looks presentable as new businesses and families move in while WestGate at Crane and I-69 continue to expand.

He added he would like to work in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce to fill the square with businesses.

He has been community-minded since he moved to Bloomfield in 1969.

He served 12 years on the Bloomfield School Board of Trustees and has been an organizer for the Bloomfield Apple Festival.

He was president of the Jaycee's, Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce, and received the Harvey Hannah award in 2005.

The Hannah award is given by the Chamber to an outstanding Bloomfield citizen who has contributed to the town.

He has also been on the Park Board, pulled weeds in Bloomfield and has set off fireworks for Independence Day for more than 30 years.
