A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011 at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Rev. Fr. Dan Doctor officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held just prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m., at the funeral home.
Jim was born on Sept. 18, 1930 in Pagosa Springs, Colorado to Bruce and Alice (Osborne) Toon. He graduated from Martinsville High School in Martinsville, Ind. in 1948. He served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1948-1952, where he was an aircraft mechanic, working on B-36 bombers. He married Rose Marie Schutt on Sept. 18, 1949 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Brunswick, Mich.
Jim and Rose bought a service station in Michigan City, Ind., when they were newly married and operated it for a few years. Jim then worked at the Chevy dealer in Michigan City for several years before moving to Coldwater. He then began working at the Chevy dealer in Coldwater for a few years before landing a job at Max Larson Ford in Coldwater. He was a top salesman there for over 35 years, retiring at the age of 65.
Mr. Toon had been a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church for many years and was very involved in the community. He was a member of the Jaycees, Lions Club, Elks and the American Legion in Coldwater. He also volunteered for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. Jim was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Jim had a great sense of humor and enjoyed spending time with friends at the Goodie Shop and at Erma's downtown. He loved to eat, especially a piece of pie from the diner. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed the lakes, the outdoors, playing cards and fishing. He made several trips to Canada with his friends to fish and took several tropical cruises with his close friends from Coldwater.
Mr. Toon is survived by his wife, Rose Toon, his son Mark Toon of Coldwater; his daughter Pam Toon of Northville; his brother Jerry (Betty) Toon of Spokane, Wash.; his sister Judy (Don) Beck of Martinsville, Ind.; his sister-in-law Kay Toon of Worthington' his grandchildren Bryan Toon, Russell Toon, Charlie Avery, Ashley Avery, Kelly Avery and his great grandchildren Brentyn, Skylar, Cameron, Alissa and Dalton Toon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Joseph Toon; his sister, Jane Minks; and his grandson Scott Toon.
