Mary DeFrees Shafer, 96, of Bloomfield, passed away Saturday, March 3, at Bloomington Hospital.
She was born Sept. 7, 1915 in Worthington to Charles DeFrees and Dora Belle DeFrees.
After graduating from Worthington High School, she attended nurses training at Welborn Hospital in Evansville. She had a long and rewarding career as a Registered Nurse, retiring from the Veterans Administration in 1975. She continued to serve as the "family" nurse for many years following retirement.
She served as Senior Regent for Women of the Moose in Martinsville in the 1970s. In recent years she has enjoyed her monthly luncheons with the Red Hat ladies of Bloomfield.
She is survived by her brother William DeFrees, of Florida; son Robert (Shirley) Winstead, of Ohio; daughter Marilyn Conn, of Bloomington; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George Shafer; three brothers Harold DeFrees, John W. DeFrees and Charles (Dick) DeFrees; four sisters Ruther McDermont, Martha Yancey, Lucy Abrams and Neomi (Tony) Niehart.
Memorial services will be held at Mt. Zion Church in Bloomfield Saturday, March 17 at 3 p.m. with Pastor John Moffatt, of Springs Valley Wesleyan Church, officiating. The family will be at the church after 1 p.m. Saturday.
Mary loved attending the Mt. Zion Church, which she often referred to as her sister, Lucy's, church. Monetary memorials may be given to Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church.
