Vertis P. Weathers, age 84, of Linton, passed away at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at Glenburn Home in Linton. He was born Aug. 26, 1927, in Daviess County, the son of Stephen & Maude (Pettit) Weathers.
He retired from General Electric in Linton in 1989. At age 16, he worked in a factory in Washington to make parachutes for World War II. He was a member of the Elnora Outdoor Club and was the last one living of the founding members.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma (Graves) Weathers, to whom he was married July 3, 1947, two daughters, Reva (Wayne) Sullivan of Bloomington & Linda (Sam) Hansens of Jasonville; three sons, Stephen (Liz) Weathers of Dugger, Paul Weathers of Indianapolis, & David Weathers of Linton; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Albert Weathers, and two sisters, Margaret Hollingsworth & Cynthia Mae Litherland.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home in Linton. Burial will follow at Slinkard Cemetery in Newberry.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
