He was born March 6, 1925 in Switz City, the son of Ralph and Leo (Stump) Newsom.
He retired from the Indiana State Highway Department where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. He also raised registered black Simmental cattle for several years. He was a member of the First Christian Church and Moose Lodge, both of Linton, and was an Army veteran of WW II.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine (Johnson) Newsom, to whom he was married Aug. 3, 1974, a son, Kerry (Jane) Newsom of Jasper, a daughter, Trisha (Carl) Lohkamp of Scotland, a step-son, Donald (Rhonda) Eyler of Terre Haute, two-step-daughters, Brenda (Mike) Combs of Bloomfield and Sheila (Kenneth) Waggner of Amo, a brother, Orval (Sarah) Newsom of Jasonville, 14 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Lucille Barret and Eileen McHenry, and a brother, Ralph Junior Newsom.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 1 at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home in Linton with Archie Ellett officiating. Burial will follow at Worthington Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, and at 10 a.m. on Friday until the hour of the service at the funeral home.
