He was born Sept. 21, 1928, to Harley and Helen (Barnett) Mathena.
On June 6, 1947, James married Betty L. (Hagerty) and they adopted two children.
James served in the U.S. Army and is a Korean War veteran. He was an operator/installer for Propane Gas Company and also worked as a custodian at Peoples Trust Co. Bank. James was a member of the Linton Assembly of God Church and he dearly loved the Lord and his church family.
Survivors include his wife Betty L. Mathena, of Linton; one son, Dennis Mathena and one daughter, Becky (Derrick) Jackson, both of Linton; grandchildren Tishia, Brett and Dayne Mathena, Alishia and Ericka Jackson; one great grandson, Boston Soncrant; and one sister, Ruth Cooksey of Paducah, Ky.
James was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jack Mathena; and one sister, Clara Auberry.
The family has requested those who wish may give a memorial contribution to the Linton Assembly of God Church with envelopes available at the funeral home.
Funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, July 17, at Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Atkins officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Linton with military graveside rites provided by the American Legion Post No. 22.
Friends may call at Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, July 16 and from 9 a.m. until the hour of service Tuesday.
