He was born in Sullivan County on March 21, 1930 the son of Noble Cox and Gertie Hale Cox.
Russell was a Korean War Army veteran, and retired from Crane Navel Weapon Support Center. He was a member of the Whosoeverwill Church, Dugger American Legion Post 224, and Dugger Masonic Lodge 721.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Snoda Patton Cox in 2005, one son, Randy Cox, three brothers, Robert, Nick, and Virgil Cox and one sister, Margie Wharff.
Survivors include two sons, Rusty Cox (Kathy) and Ronnie Cox (Elaine), all of Dugger, three grandchildren, Brock, Dustin, and Kallie, six great grandchildren, Grant, Nevaeh, Olivia, Daniel, Adin, and Blake.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at Newkirk's Funeral Home in Dugger with Pastor Dan Dyer officiating. Burial in the Mount Moriah Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Dugger American Legion.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
