Eastern Greene rolls to homecoming win

LITTLE CINCINNATI -- The Eastern Greene Thunderbirds got back on the winning track Friday night with a 65-20 homecoming pasting of the Union Bulldogs.

"That's what we wanted all week," EGHS coach Luke Dean said. "We had a good week of practice, wanted to get the taste of last week out of our mouths and that's what we did."

The win pushes the Thunderbirds over the .500 mark at 4-3 overall and evens their Southwest Seven Conference record at 3-3.

"We came to play tonight, last week they didn't," Dean said referring to a lopsided loss to North Central one week ago. "Despite their record we know they're tough and they're so scrappy and we knew that if we gave them any kind of shot the same would happen that happened last week and at North Knox."

The Bulldogs fall to 2-5 on the year and remain winless in the SW7 at 0-4.

"We just got beat up physically, at almost every position we were getting beat off the ball," Union coach Todd Gambill said. "They executed their blocks and we didn't start executing ours until the second half."

Eastern Greene managed to spread the wealth around as five different players scored touchdowns and three of them -- Jarred Groomer (3), Briar Martindale (2) and Cole Postell (3) -- scored two or more times individually.

Groomer ran for a game-high 175 yards on 17 carries to go along with three TDs while Martindale found the end zone twice on the ground and once on a hookup with Logan Frye for a 49 yard scoring strike.

Through the air Martindale was 7 for 11 for 146 yards without an interception. On the ground he ran for 131 yards on seven carries.

"We came out and got the ground game going then we were able to throw a little bit," Dean said. "We got them out of the box and were able to make the plays."

For Postell it was three a three touchdown night while Frye was joined by Cody Hopkins in reaching the end zone.

Hopkins' tally came on a fourth quarter interception of a Weston Inman pass that he returned 80 yards to paydirt.

For the Bulldogs it was Darrell Faulkner completing a first quarter flea flicker play. After a double handoff, Union quarterback Sterling Langley hurled the ball to Faulkner who completed the 77 yard scoring effort.

"It's one of those trick plays that just happen," Dean said. "Our safeties had a little trouble, but it happens."

Their other tally came from Faulkner as well who returned an Eastern Greene kickoff 95 yards for the Bulldogs second tally of the game.

"You can score a touchdown on trick plays," Gambill said. "But you can't win games very often on them.

"It happens but you're not going to do it very often."

Mike Foglesong led Union in rushing with 134 yards on 26 carries while Langley was 9 for 18 from 120 yards through the air.

Aside from throwing Hopkins' interception, Inman completed just 1 of 7 attempts for 28 yards.

"We're not physically matching up," Gambill said. "And until we decide to want to match up physically, we're going to play from behind because they're going to run the ball and we're not going to be able to stop them."

Both teams return to action on Friday night at 7 p.m. as Eastern Greene hosts Southside Home School and the Bulldogs host Linton-Stockton at Dugger.
