Winners announced for 2012 Bloomfield Apple Festival Art & Photography Show

Monday, October 8, 2012

The number of entrants in the Bloomfield Apple Festival Art and Photography Show was down this year, but the quality excelled according to organizers.

A total of 202 pieces of art, ranging from landscape photography to portrait paintings, hung in the Bloomfield Eastern Greene Public Library starting Friday afternoon.

The number was down from 267 pieces in the 2011 show, according to long-time volunteer Vera Biery.

Art Show Chairperson Darlene Jolley said the pieces of art come from all over the county, the Bedford area and around North Daviess Schools.

"We have artwork from kids from different schools. Some came in as individuals and some came in from their teachers," Jolley said.

Bloomfield Elementary School fourth grader Kirsten Lee was excited to see one of her four entries won best of show.

The drawings were charicatures of fish, including a guppy, clown fish, gold fish and beta fish.

"I like fish a lot so I figured I should draw them," Lee said about her entries.

Lee said she was not happy about her drawings at first, but once she added color she was glad to enter them. Drawing is one of Lee's favorite things to do.

Jolley said the art show has also been a family affair for some with family members entering artwork in the show.

Don Bridges and grandson Justin Bridges both took home first place in the landscape and portrait divisions.

Biery noted she has seen Don Bridges' art grow substantially over the years at the art show.

"Mr. Bridges taught himself. He was never bad to begin with, but his talent has really evolved," Biery said, noting she has been working with the art show since the early 1980s.

Jolley said the artists are not the only ones who get excited about the annual art show.

"We had people knocking on the doors before we were even ready," Jolley said.

She added the art show is an opportunity for local artists to show off their talent and get some exposure.

"This is an amateur art show, but the quality of the work is very good," Jolley said. "The students were very enthusiastic, so that was fun to see."

Pat Dowdy, who helped in the inception of the art show with Linda Lohkamp, said she has seen some changes over the years since the show started around 1980.

"It's evolved in the fact we have an indoor place for it now. We had to do it outside (before). The first several years we had been very lucky," Dowdy said.

The biggest change she has seen over the years is the inclusion of photography in the art show, which wasn't included until 1993.

"It has grown tremendously. Each year the numbers jump back and forth," Dowdy said.
