TERRE HAUTE -- The Terre Haute IHSAA Cross Country Sectional produced only a handful of advancements by area runners.

Only the Shakamak Lakers boys team and Linton-Stockton freshman Janzen Franklin earned berths in Saturday's Bedford North Lawrence Semistate while Lady Laker senior Savannah Turner took home fourth in the girls race to earn her spot on Saturday.

The top five teams and top 15 individuals advance to the next round.

Shakamak's Savannah Turner (1451) shows the form that led her to a fourth place finish at Tuesday's IHSAA Cross Country Sectional at Terre Haute. Turner's time of 20 minutes, 14 seconds earned her a berth in Saturday's Semistate at Bedford North Lawrence. (By Rick Curl/Greene County Daily World).

Sweet ran point for a Shakamak team that edged Riverton Parke by just points for the final transfer spot in the team standings.

"Getting out individually is awesome," Sweet said. "Our goal was to get out as a team and I'm glad we accomplished it."

The Lakers finished in fifth with a team score of 70 thanks to their top three runners finishing better. Sweet (18:01) was joined by Kyle Schubla (18:45) in 27th and Eric Johnson (18:53) in 29th.

Linton-Stockton freshman Janzen Franklin (1609) advanced to Saturday's IHSAA Semistate after a 13th place finish at the Terre Haute Sectional Tuesday afternoon. (By Rick Curl/Greene County Daily World).

RP could only muster finishes of 18th, 34th and 36th for their top three runners.

"We accomplished our goal as far as advancing to the regional," Shakamak boys coach Zack Whitkanack said. "We were down a guy this week and so we were without our third, fourth guy and we needed our sixth man to step up."

That was Clay Reynolds who took advantage of the opportunity afforded him. He crossed the line 20:15 for 53rd place.

"He stepped up and ran a good time here," Whitkanack said. "It was his best time of the year and it helped us to sneak out of here with two points to spare."

As for Franklin, a 13th place finish in a time of 17 minutes, 51 seconds was good enough to earn his first regional berth in his first attempt.

"It feels pretty good," he said. "I'm a freshman but I felt pretty strong. It's hard being a freshman and making it out.

"Everybody is really strong in this race, it' real hard to get out."

For Turner it was a personal best finish in the post season. She improved five spots over her ninth-place finish at last year's sectional.

"I'm really happy considering the weather and that I don't feel great," Turner said. "I really had couple of hard runs a couple of days ago trying to prepare myself more for regionals than sectionals.

"I'm proud of myself, I'm super happy with fourth place, I can't beat that."

When the girls race had ended initially, the Lady Lakers appeared to edge out Sullivan for the final transfer spot but a scoring error, that was later corrected, shifted them into sixth.

The regional is set for a 10:30 a.m. start at Bedford North Lawrence for the girls race and 11:10 a.m. for the boys race.

Again, the top five teams and top 15 individual will advance to the Brown County Semistate on Saturday, Oct. 27.
