Worthington firemen to help local students

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

The Worthington Fire Territory will be hosting it's Third Annual "Keep the Kids Warm" fundraiser on Saturday.

All of the money raised from this event, that runs from 4 to 8 p.m., will go to the students of White River Valley/Worthington Elementary School who are in need of new coats, shoes, hats, and gloves.

Featured at the fundraiser will be a fish fry, live music and a silent auction.

The fish fry will also feature a menu of baked beans, cole slaw and potato salad. Hot dogs and chips will also be served, along with a wide assortment of desserts.

The cost of the meal will be by donation only and like in the past, the event will feature a live country western band that will perform while guests eat.

The silent auction will have a variety of items starting at 4 p.m.

Among the items is a signed football from the Indianapolis Colt's wide receiver Austin Collie, a voucher to see a 2013 St. Louis Cardinals game, an American Girl Caroline doll and book, along with many other items.

Worthington Fire Territory Chief Kyle Steward commented that "people around the Worthington area have been very supportive of this event. We have always had a good crowd, and a lot of great items to give away in the silent auction."

In each of the last two years of the fundraiser, the Fire Territory was able to purchase around 60 jackets and 50 pairs of shoes that were requested for students. The need for jackets has increased this year to around 80, and the fire department hopes to be able to purchase around 60 pairs of shoes, hats, and gloves as well.
