Bulldogs look to finish with win

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

DUGGER -- The Union Bulldogs look to gain a little redemption before heading into the postseason when they travel to Oakland City for the regular season finale at Wood Memorial.

Neither team has been an offensive juggernaut this season, but at least Union has found some success.

After last week's 71-0 loss to Southwest Seven Conference co-leader Linton-Stockton, the Bulldogs (2-6, 0-5 SW7) look to get their offense untracked against a porous Wood Memorial (0-8, 0-5) defense -- one that's given up 46.4 points per game -- as the two conference foes battle to move out of the cellar in the league.

With quarterback Sterling Langley at the helm, Union hopes to increase their offensive output over and beyond the 19.5 points they've score on average.

With the help of running back Mike Foglesong, the Bulldogs and coach Todd Gambill hope to keep the Trojans within their dismal 8.3 offensive points per game averages.

What has been a disappointing season for first year coach Joey Paridaen at Wood Memorial began with a 42-34 loss to Princeton, which ended up being their only double-digit offensive showing of the season.

In the seven games since, they've scored six points three times, seven points twice and been shutout twice, the last being a 41-0 loss at North Central last week.

Now the Bulldogs hope to exploit, once again, a notably weak opponent.

Their two wins this year have come at the expense of Riverton Parke and Indiana Deaf School. Both saw Union score at least 30 points.

Against the hapless Panthers they came from behind to post a 44-42 win while the Deaf Hoosiers were 36-16 victims.

While Gambill's teams have not been able to score consistently, they have been competitive in most games.

Aside from a 32-6 loss at Tecumseh in week No. 4, they've managed to score in double-digits in all but last week's loss.

Wood Memorial leads 8-4 in the short series including last year's 41-20 win at Dugger in a sectional game. Wood has won four straight.

The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Trojan Field.
