Clothe-a-Child and Toys for Tots applications available

Thursday, October 11, 2012

Applications are now available for the annual Greene County Clothe-A-Child and Toys for Tots programs.

Low-income families in the Greene County school districts with children under the age of 12 are eligible to apply for the benefits by Wednesday, Oct. 31.

Applications can be picked up and delivered to the Greene County Division of Family Resources, located at 104 County Road 70E in Bloomfield; Linton-Stockton Chamber of Commerce office, located at 159 NW 1st St.; Bloomfield Town Hall, located at 12 E. Main St.; Jasonville Utility Office, located at 304 W. Main St.; and Worthington Town Hall, located on State Road 67.

The applications can also be mailed to P.O. Box 516, Linton, Ind., 47441, and must be postmarked by Nov. 1.

The programs are sponsored by the Linton Civitan Club, Linton Rotary Club, Bloomfield Rotary Club, and Bloomfield Psi Iota Xi.

Board member Karen Strueh stressed the eligibility is for students living in Greene County school districts because some students may live in Clay County, but live in the Shakamak School District. Also some students may live in Springville, but attend Eastern Greene Schools.

"I can't give a specific income eligibility. We rank them (applicants), and make the cutoff depending on funding," Strueh explained. "Generally over the past few years it has been where the food stamp cut off is."

Strueh added while it is impossible to know in advance where the funding will set when it comes time to go through applications, the program has been able to help on average 600 families each year.

"For a lot of families, this is the only Christmas they get," Strueh said.

Families will be notified the week after Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 22, if they are eligible for the program.

Strueh said the community can help with monetary and toy donations to help the program help more families.

Monetary and new toy donations can be delivered to Reister and Strueh, located at 18 S. Franklin Street in Bloomfield. Toys can also be taken to the Sears store in Linton, located in the shopping center.

Strueh noted help will be needed soon to man the bell-ringing stations at Wal-Mart and Baeslers in Linton and Bloomfield IGA. She said Kevin and Laura Cross will be coordinating the Linton locations and the Psi Iota Xi will be coordinating the Bloomfield location.

A complete list of Toys for Tots barrels will also be released once the barrels are in place.

"Probably the week before Thanksgiving is when the barrels will be out. We usually get those out late in November up until the weekend before Christmas," Strueh said.
