BEDFORD -- Runners from Greene County competed at the boys and girls cross country regional here at Bedford North Lawrence High School Saturday morning.

Shakamak, the only complete team among the local competitors, finished eighth out of the 10 teams entered. The top five teams and top 15 individuals advanced to next week's Brown County Semistate.

Luke Sweet of Shakamak was the top boys finisher, placing 24th overall.

Janzen Franklin of Linton-Stockton and Parker Ramsey of Bloomfield competed as individuals and finished 25th and 26th, respectively.

There were just three local ladies that ran in the girls race, with all three finishing among the leaders and earning a spot at the semistate.

Savannah Turner of Shakamak, who was fourth at Terre Haute Sectional, finished eight overall with a time of 19 minutes and 59 seconds.

"I think I went out too fast," said Turner. "But I was happy with how things worked out.

"I figured I would be able to finish fifth, sixth or seventh and I was eighth."

Alli Workman of Bloomfield took 11th with a time of 20:02.

"I felt much more comfortable today than at the sectional," said the Lady Cardinal freshman. "Today I was much less concerned with the runners around me and just was concerned with myself.

"I did not go out too fast today. I just tried to find a spot and then moved up from there. It worked out pretty well. My goal was to at least make it to the semistate and I was able to achieve that today."

Eastern Greene junior Hannah Resler will join Turner and Workman at the semistate by placing 13th. Her time was 20:06.

"I was a little nervous and started faster than I wanted," said Resler, who was among the leaders at the start. "I started to slow down a little bit after the first K.

"The weather was perfect and I was just able to gut it out at the end."

The semistate at Brown County will start Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The top six teams and top 15 individuals will advance to the state finals, which are set for Saturday, Oct. 27 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country course in Terre Haute.

"I was really proud of both Alli and Parker," said BHS boys and girls coach Caleb Dunkerly. "If Parker had of ran a PR (personal record), he would have had a chance.

"Alli put together a really steady race. After a good week of practice, I think Alli will have a pretty good shot to make it to state."
